Environmental responsibility

Our environmentally responsible operations are based on life cycle thinking. It ranges from the design of new properties to their construction, maintenance and fundamental improvement.

The biggest environmental loads in our operations are caused by the construction of properties, building materials and energy use stemming from housing. We are constantly monitoring new life-cycle cost-effective, smart and low-carbon solutions for the construction and use of buildings.

With housing choices, you can significantly impact your carbon footprint. Efficient use of space, appropriate room temperature and the use of renewable electricity are a good start for greener housing.

Artificial intelligence for heating control

The Fortum SmartLiving intelligent heating system, introduced in Espoon Asunnot’s properties, provides even heat and saves energy.

The introduction of the Fortum SmartLiving service has been a natural way to continue the climate actions already started and to implement the City of Espoo’s climate programme. In addition, it fits well with our values and strategic priorities, one of which is sustainable actions.

Everyday environmental actions are taken together

Climate change mitigation requires action from all of us.

Environmental impacts are caused by housing as well as the construction and maintenance of our properties. Therefore, the residents of Espoon Asunnot also play a significant role in the fight against climate change.

We encourage our residents to reduce the environmental impact of housing by telling them about ways to reduce the energy and water consumption at home and by investing in property-specific waste sorting and recycling. The properties also have residents acting as environmental experts, and we regularly train them.

Emission-free heat

Our homes are heated with Fortum’s emission-free Eko Plus district heating, and the real estate electricity we use is EKOenergia-labelled bioenergy.

Nordic Swan ecolabelled house

Espoon Asunnot’s first property with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel will be built in Karakallio.

Construction according to the Nordic Swan Ecolabel takes into account, among other things, the ecology and origin of building materials, the safety and healthiness of used chemicals, moisture management and energy efficiency. In the case of construction waste, the project aims at a recycling rate of at least 70%.

Participation in the VAETS operational programme

VAETS is an energy efficiency agreement for rental housing companies that we joined in 2010. When the agreement period ended in 2016, we received an honourable mention for our outstanding long-term activities and our conscientious commitment to the Energy Efficiency Agreement for Property Sector in regard to rental housing in 2010–2016.

The new VAETS period started at the beginning of 2017 and will run until the end of 2025. The aim is to reduce total energy consumption by 7.5 per cent by the end of 2025 compared to 2015.
