Storing items in the stairwell poses a fire safety risk

Storing any items in the stairwell is prohibited, including doormats. The reason for this is fire safety.

Items may only be stored in designated storage areas on the property. For example, storing prams and bicycles in the stairwell is prohibited. This prohibition is based on the Finnish Rescue Act and is also set out in our house rules.

In an emergency, all extra objects in the stairwell can endanger safe evacuation and hinder the work of rescue personnel.

In the event of a fire in the building, items stored in the stairwell can easily ignite, produce toxic smoke, and spread the fire. People may also trip over them.

A doormat in front of the door can wedge under the door, preventing the door from opening and slowing evacuation from the apartment.

Notice to remove items from the stairwell

If we are visiting an apartment and there is a doormat outside the apartment door in the stairwell, we will move the mat inside.

If we are visiting the property and notice prams, bicycles, doormats, or other items in the stairwell, we will attach a tag or sticker stating that the items must be removed.

You can also inform your neighbour if they store items in the stairwell or keep a doormat outside their door. You can also report these issues anonymously. Our website has friendly notes (“heippalappu” in Finnish) that you can print out and drop into your neighbour’s mailbox. Separate notes are available for items and for doormats left in the stairwell.

You can find the printouts on our website on the Disturbances page.

Thank you for taking care of your own safety and that of others!
