Tip: How to keep indoor air fresh

You can improve indoor air with small daily actions. Clean regularly and keep your home tidy. Also keep the air vents clean, air the apartment the right way, and dry laundry properly.

Keep supply and exhaust air vents clean

Supply air vents (fresh air coming in)

Apartments have replacement or supply air vents in the living rooms and bedrooms. Replacement air vents are in the window frame or on the outside wall of the apartment. The supply air vents are in the wall of the apartment near the ceiling.

What to do

  • Wipe the vent surfaces regularly to remove dust (for example with a damp cloth).
  • Do not cover or close the vents. They are designed to bring fresh air into the apartment.
  • If the vents are closed, the ventilation will not work properly. Air can then come in through a letterbox or a doorway, for example. This can cause draughts, coldness and odours in the home.

Exhaust air vents (air going out)

Exhaust air vents are usually located in the bathroom, toilet, wardrobe and kitchen. Clean them regularly, at least once a year. This will ensure that ventilation works as well as possible.

Cleaning instructions

  • Rotate the outer ring anticlockwise. Tug the valve and pull it out. Do not rotate the central control - it will affect the amount of air flow.
  • Clean the vent with a detergent solution and wipe it dry. If the vent has a foamed plastic silencer, vacuum clean any dust from it.
  • Reinstall the vent by rotating the outer ring clockwise.

Air the apartment in the right way

Even in autumn, fresh outdoor air is important — but air your home smartly:

  • Open windows for cross-ventilation (two windows/rooms) for a few minutes. Air changes quickly, but the apartment won’t cool down too much.
  • Let fresh air in the bedroom before going to sleep to support better rest.
  • Avoid keeping windows open for a long time, because it can disturb ventilation and waste energy.

Dry laundry in the drying room

Drying laundry indoors increases humidity in the air. Too much moisture can make the air feel stuffy and, in the worst case, cause moisture damage.

  • Use the building’s drying room or a tumble dryer whenever possible.
  • If you dry laundry in the apartment, place it in a room with good exhaust ventilation, such as the bathroom.
  • Avoid drying large amounts of laundry at the same time in the living room or bedroom.

Fresh indoor air makes living more comfortable and helps prevent problems like excess humidity and stuffiness. Every resident can help keep the home fresh and pleasant with simple daily actions.
