An energy saving competition for our properties has started

The high price of energy and possible availability issues will impact all of our daily lives in the coming winter, so everyone’s contribution is needed to save energy.

Espoon Asunnot has decided to expedite its energy saving measures by participating in the Down a Degree energy saving campaign and organising a competition entitled The Biggest Saver for its properties. It involves properties competing against each other in two categories: heat and electricity.

The Biggest Saver competition has begun on 1 November 2022 and end on 30 April 2023. This means properties have six months to reduce their heat and energy consumption compared to the corresponding period of the previous year (1 November 2021–30 April 2022).

The video below is in Finnish.

The competition covers all properties completed before 1 November 2021 to ensure comparability with the previous year’s period. That said, we encourage all of our residents – even those living in newer properties –  to save energy, since the current energy crisis is a challenge that affects us all.

The three best properties in each category will receive a prize

The three biggest savers in the heat and electricity categories will receive cash prizes. The sum must be used to improve the property’s general comfort of living, and the decision on the use will be made by the residents’ meeting.

We will be using our website to be publish information updates on the top ten of both categories at least twice during the competition period.

More details on the prizes of the categories and updates on the competition can be found on the competition website.

Not too cold, but not too hot either

Lowering indoor temperature moderately is often a straightforward way of saving energy and money. This is why we have set as our goal to drop the heating of our properties by 0.5 degrees. All adjustments will be made in a controlled manner. The measures will particularly focus on properties that are found to be outside the target variation range for indoor temperatures (19–22 degrees).

Almost all of our properties utilise the intelligent Fortum SmartLiving heating system on which additional information is available here (in Finnish). Information is also available on what you can do to affect the temperature of your home. For example, did you know that you can use the radiator’s valves to lower your housing unit’s temperature.

Warm domestic water also impacts a property’s energy consumption significantly. This is why we have equipped some of our properties with water-saving fixtures and will continue to do so in the future. Another fast and concrete energy saving measure is to reduce the consumption of warm water – this may even help your property rank higher in the competition.

In terms of electricity, we will consider each property’s total consumption, which means that the energy saving measures carried out in your home will also make a difference. We will strive to reduce electricity consumption by harmonising communal sauna (“lenkkisauna”) practices and conducting extensive inspections in the common areas of properties to ensure energy efficiency.

Gather tips and post your own ideas on social media

We will be sharing the fast-acting and concrete energy saving tips of the Down a Degree campaign through all communication channels, including social media. Now, if ever, is the time to start following us on Facebook and Instagram, gather tips for later use and share some of your own ideas.

Information on the detailed rules and prizes of the competition is available on the competition’s website.

Small streams make great rivers, which is also true with energy consumption. This means that even individual actions that may seem insignificant make a difference.
